Women's FA cup Preliminary round ... CFC (5) v (0) v Aylesbury Utd ... KO 14.00 ... match report by Kirsty:-
This eagerly awaited fixture was a repeat of the FA Cup prelim round from last year which went in Aylesbury's favour 1-0
Carterton started much the brighter of the 2 sides and despite kicking in to the breeze were in comfortable control of the game in the early stages with Ann Harvey at the centre of everything that the Carterton team created.
Aylesbury settled into the game and worked the ball forward very well but appeared to be lacking in the final third of the pitch. Carterton began making things more challenging for the Aylesbury defence with Verity Newell in particular causing them problems. On 22 minutes another ball threaded through from midfield saw Newell slot the ball home to put Carterton into a well deserved lead.
Carterton maintained the pressure and just before half time Newell found herself in space inside the Aylesbury penalty box and executed a delicate chip over the keeper to double Cartertons lead.
The game saw Carterton deploy their wide players in very advanced positions in the second half which always gave them options when the ball had been won in the midfield. The width stretched Aylesbury to the limit and raids down both wings were proving successful. Lauren Spragg in particular was able to enjoy a lot of time on the ball to feed the forward players. Early pressure in the half saw Carterton win a corner. The ball was subsequently played back to the taker, Ann Harvey who struck the ball into the far corner of the net from the tightest of angles. A corner some moments later saw Harvey deliver a pinpoint cross into the Aylesbury area which was despatched superbly into the net by Vicky Strode increasing Carterton's lead to 4.
Verity Newell completed her hatrick shortly before the end after an excellent interchange of passes through the midfield saw her finish in style. To their credit the Aylesbury players maintained their effort and were unlucky not to nick a consolation goal in the latter stages of the game.
However, the team performance of the Carterton squad was always going to make the match difficult for whoever the visitors were and this was reflected in the final 5-0 result in their favour.
Carterton will now play hosts to Stoke ladies on the 16th September at Kilkenny lane with a 2pm kick off in the first round of the Women's FA Cup.
